Introducing the San Francisco Trail Collection: East Bay Volume I

The first user-friendly, easy to carry map book of trails for the San Francisco East Bay!

Oakland, California, May 7, 2009: Interactive Recreation Information Systems (IRIS) announced the launch of the San Francisco Trail Collection: East Bay Volume I map book. Consisting of over 580 miles of trails in 38 parks and regional trails, the East Bay Volume I map book is the first GPS-based map book of trails in Northern Alameda and Western Contra Costa Counties.

“Having hiked over one thousand miles to capture GPS trail data in the San Francisco Bay Area, we are very familiar with the inconvenience of large, unwieldy maps,” said Susan Kaymon, President of IRIS, Inc. “We wanted to create a map book that was easy to carry and gives you the information you need to make your time on the trails pleasurable.”

With the “know before you go” philosophy, the San Francisco Trail Collection: East Bay Volume I arms the user with detailed trail information such as: width, surface condition, authorized users and pet policy. Asked about essential features of the map book Ms Kaymon stated “When we talked to people about what they would like to see in a map book, there were two features almost everyone said they wanted. First was to add arrows to indicate trail steepness. Most people don’t understand how to read the contour lines on a map, so we dropped the contour lines and added arrows. Second, was are my dogs allowed on the trail and can they be off-leash. This particular feature is important to us too since we had an Italian Greyhound join us on almost all of the trails we hiked. Our maps include easy to see pet policies on a trail by trail basis.”

“We are excited about the San Francisco Trail Collection: East Bay Volume I,” said Ms. Kaymon, “it really highlights the extent of the outdoor recreation we have available to us in the East Bay. Our hope is that people will use the map book to extend their horizons and discover the beauty of the East Bay.”

About the Company

While training for their third marathon, Susan and Claire Kaymon realized how little they knew about the trails in their local area. After checking other sources, they discovered there was no integrated source of trail data that offered them the quality of information they needed. With this in mind they founded Interactive Recreation Information Systems, Inc and began capturing GPS/GIS data to document the trails in the San Francisco Bay Area for use in software and mapping applications.
